We here at Archonia are, of course, HUGE superhero movie fans. Wether you are into the slightly more serious stuff DC does, like the Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel or Watchmen (as I am), or you love the more upbeat and funny Marvel movies, like Avengers, Iron Man, Guardians, Thor and others, there is no denying that we are in the golden age of superhero movies!
Most of these movies rely heavily on CGI effects to bring us the more fantastical aspects of these worlds, so it is always fun to sneak a peek behind the curtain and see how our favorite breath-taking scenes and heroes got realised.
The main list will be focused on the more CGI heavy films, as the more realistic movies (Nolan’s Batman movies, Captain America: Winter Solider for example) use CGI more or less only for backgrounds and stuff like that.
While this is still interesting, we are going to look more closely at truly funny gaps between shooting the movie and the finished product.
Without further ado, here is the list!
Avengers Hulk vs Thor
Remember how epic the fight between Hulk and Thor looked on screen? Of course you do! Behind the scenes… not so much, as you can see above!
Hulk in Avengers
Hulk is a Marvel (pun intended) of animation and mocap in the Avengers movie, but it’s really funny when you picture Mark Ruffalo act the scenes out, on the set, in grey pajamas (read: mo-cap suit). The movie is surely better for it, but it’s still super funny to look at.
Man of Steel Alien Dragon Rider Russel Crowe
Remember in Man of Steel, when badass Russell Crowe/Jor-El rides on his giant alien dragon like a total badass, in the amazing opening scenes of the film? Yeah? Well, in relaity it didn’t look quite as badass.
Yes, he rides a green pillow in front of a green screen.
Iron Man Pajama Party
Remember when Iron Man and War Machine took on Whiplash, in Iron Man 2′s epic final battle? This is what it looked like while shooting:
Don’t worry it gets worse.
Tony Stark High Heels
Tony Stark is, without a doubt, the coolest guy in the Marvel universe on screen! A lot of it has to do with Robert Downey Jr.’s amazing swagger. What’s not that cool looking is his foot wear he sometimes gets, so he doesn’t seem small next to his truly huge co-stars like Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans. Yupp, those are high heels. Luckily Downey has that amazing swagger I mentioned before, so he doesn’t seem self conscious about those at all, while he struts along the set. It has nothing to do with CGI, but come on… way too great a picture to not include here, am I right?
Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan
The coolest effect of the Watchmen movie is clearly the realisation of Dr. Manhattan. The blue skinned, almost always nude, god like superhuman is a sight to behold, as you can see above. To not have to animate the blue glow that comes off the character too, director Zack Snyder had the idea to give him not only the usual grey pajama mocap suit (like we saw in Iron Man 2 above), but outfit that thing with a multitude of bright blue lights! Check it out:
Guardians’ Rocket and Groot
When Guardians of the Galaxy hit theatres, the CGI creatures did even steal the show from main lead Chris Pratt for a lot of the movie. Rocket and Groot were done so well that not even one movie goer thought about CGI when they interacted. here is how it looked for the actors on set.
When Drax comforts Rocket at the end:
I hope this doesn’t need to be said, but here goes anyway… we love all of these movies on this list, so this is not a put down in any way. The work these guys put into those movies, be it the mocap, or animation, are what bring characters to life which would otherwise look either really bad, or could not be achieved at all. So, in a way, this is more of a standing ovation toward all these amazingly talented people, who make our geek dreams come true. The behind the scenes pictures are just too funny to not share
