In this section, you’ll find all recent headlines that you, as a pop culture aficionado, should not miss. We can’t all keep track of everything, so each week we’ll select the important news for you. We bring you our: Geekly News Round-Up!
New Batman v Superman Spot
A new TV spot for Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice has been released on the weekend and it gives us the context for the famous “Tell me, do you bleed? You will!” line, from the first trailer! You can see the 30 second spot above! I really like what I am seeing, even if I think Affleck’s line delivery could have been a bit more angry or aggressive, but this is only a few second glimpse of the scene, so I think it will play better when viewed in it’s entirety. Cavill’s Superman is properly super in here, in the way he just raises a leg to kick away the Batmobile, like you would do with a soccer ball you wanna kick back in a very uninterested way to some kids, or the “excuse me, bitch?!” look he gives Batman after the blood question. Very very cool stuff. Can’t wait! CAN’T WAIT!!!!
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow News
CW President Marke Pedowitz had some high praise for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow at the Television Critics Association last weekend:
“It is fun. It’s big. It’s lighter than ‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’. It’s a lot of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ meets ‘Doctor Who.’ And it takes your mind off the troubles of the world,”
In an interview with Varienty he explained further:
“We sat down with Geoff and started pitching on what the show could be [and] got really excited by the ‘Dirty Dozen’ and ‘Ocean’s 11′ kind of style, a real mashup or team-up of these characters on a singular quest,”
while producer Greg Berlanti had this to say:
“The big discovery for me in this show is how much of a family it is. It reminds me a lot of some of the family shows I’ve done. I’m not sure I had that thought or any of us had that thought when we started out.”
Starring Brandon Routh as the Atom, Caity Lotz as White Canary, Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave, Victor Garber as Professor Martin Stein and Franz Drameh as Jefferson “Jax” Jackson, Ciara Renee as Hawkgirl, Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter and Casper Crump as Vandal Savage, “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” makes its debut on Thursday, January 21.
New Suicide Squad Image
The newest picture of DC’s upcoming movie “Suicide Squad” comes to us via USAToday and shows the main core of the Squad, back to back and ready to fight! Harley Quinn actress Margo Robbie also talked about her character with with magazine Cineplex:
“Harley is creepy, violent, crazy — all of the things that I aspire to be! It’s the fun of living vicariously through someone who is doing things that I would never do in real life.”
She also revealed that she actually played a small part into getting co star Will Smith into the Squad, with whom she already played in the movie “Focus”.
“I actually texted him when I heard he was in negotiations to be in ‘Suicide Squad’ and kept peer-pressuring him. ‘You’d better be taking this movie!’ He obviously signed on for his own reasons, but I was so incredibly happy that we got to do Round Two. He’s awesome on set and awesome off set. He’s just a really, really good person.”
“Suicide Squad,” based on the DC Comics team and starring Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.
Flash Supergirl Crossover + Kevin Smith
Greg Berlanti, producer and head honcho for the Flash, Arrow, Legend’s of Tomorrow and Supergirl, recently talked again about the chances of a crossover between the Flash and Supergirl, to Entertainment Weekly.
“It would have to figured out very soon. I would love it, a lot of things would have to go right and people would have to say ‘Yes’. It would all have to be figured out in the next month or so. As it remains right now we’ve talked internally about how cool it would be, but we haven’t had official conversations. [The CW president Mark Pedowitz] is supportive.”
Also, during the Television Critics Association press tour this weekend it has been announced that filmmaker/comic writer/podcaster Kevin Smith will be directing an episode of the Flash, later this season. There has been no additional information about it, but fans of Smith (like me) know from his ‘Fatman on Batman’ podcast how much in love he is with the show, so this is a really cool development.
DC Shared Universe News
There has been a large amount of DC film related interviews in the last week, thanks to USAToday, so I will round a few bits of those up here.
Zack Snyder, director of MoS, BvS and the upcoming Justice League films, talked about introducing the Justice League members.
“I love Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman, but having Flash and Aquaman and Cyborg and to see them all standing together, it’s a pretty dorky and cool experience for me. Basically every one of those characters has a logo that you would recognize without them standing there, and that’s a hard thing to achieve in this pop-culture world. We have history to draw on, but we also have these new frontiers to forge.
It’s our belief and our goal to honor the legacy of the studio with a batch of films that speaks to that world.”
He also spoke briefly about Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, which will debut in Batman v Superman, this March.
“She’s a powerful female superhero, which is a thing we haven’t had for a while. She’s a piece of IP that basically exists in pop culture in a way where every kid’s got a Wonder Woman T-shirt and they don’t really know why. I want to give the why back to that.”
Henry Cavill, Superman himself, added his own opinion about the now starting DC universe.
“There’s a whole world of fantasy in comic books, and if you just focus on one small portion of it, you’re never going to get the full magic of it. Now that we’re introducing all these other characters and really building the universe to a far larger place than just a simple alien’s life on Earth, it really makes it extraordinarily interesting.”
David Ayer talked a bit about his Suicide Squad as well and called Jared Leto “the king of Planet Joker”, who transcends bad or evil.
Ayer also explained that one of the best days of the shoot was… wait for it… when Ben Affleck has been on set as Batman himself and had to do a big fight scene.
“We made him fight. He’s awesome (as Batman). … You really sense that but for the grace of God he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world.”
Ben Affleck himself had also a few words to share about Suicide Squad and while he didn’t want to admit to being in the film a lot (because of very long and strict non disclosure agreements he signed), he said this about the movie:
“It felt like I have such a cool cousin. This thing that is so awesome is somehow related to me, and that was really exciting because it started to feel like a constellation of things, and I’ve never had that feeling.”
Sounds all amazing to me! Very excited to see those movies! BvS and Suicide Squad are my currently most hotly anticipated movies!
Daredevil Season 2 Trailer
Speaking of hotly anticipated, the list for that in TV land tops Daredevil season 2! I loved season 1 and the season 2 will bring in Punisher and Elektra as well. Check out the really cool trailer above! The second season will debut on March 18th worldwide, which is exactly a week before BvS hits theatres… so plan accordingly. Enough time to binge it twice before going out for the movie!
