A new week filled to the brim with geeky news, like new superhero video games, Supergirl news, Suicide Squad and more!
Supergirl Finds Its Superman
As we reported a while back, CW's Supergirl was going to cast its own version of Superman for the Arrowverse! That role has now been filled by Tyler Hoechin.
Talking to Mail Online he revealed how he sees his role of Superman in contrast with Henry Cavill:+
"I never try to compare and contrast performances, because it's such an iconic character already. Superman is Superman so I'm just going to try to carry on the tradition of that and play that part."
"I think the fun is going to be finding where Clark Kent is in this world. I'm just excited to find out Clark's sense of humour."
The actor also shared via twitter the following statement:
Could not be more honored & humbled to be given the opportunity to play this incredible & beloved character. Can't wait to get to work!
To which CW's Flash, Grant Gustin, replied:
Superman is officially coming to the Berlanti-verse!! So dope! Welcome @TylerL_Hoechlin.
Awesome Doctor Strange Fan Poster
Very talented artists Rob Csiki shared a fan made Doctor Strange poster online. Check it out above! I think this is a s cool as it gets and hope Marvel will buy this from him. Looking at the last mediocre Marvel movie posters, there is no way they will be able to top that on their own.
Mephisto Rumored To Be Defenders Villain
Screen Geek has a story for us that seemingly reveals who the big bad for the upcoming Defenders show on Netflix is going to be! The Defenders is the team up show between Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
So, according to the rumors the villain might be...
Mephisto! That is basically the devil of the Marvel universe.
While this seems like a weird choice, it might be used to pave the way for the second round of weirder rumored Netflix Marvel shows, like Ghostrider and Moon Knight.
While this is a rumor, to me it seems like a very bad idea, which could ruin the very grounded feel the Netflix Marvel shows established so far. We will find out soon enough, as the Defenders show will start shooting later this summer.
Major Justice League News For Tuesday
After the news made the rounds over the weekend that a large group of influential bloggers and film critics (Steven Frosty Weintraub from Collider, Umberto Gonzales from Heroic Hollywood and Mark Hughes from Forbes for example) have been invited to a set visit in London, I followed up on that on Twitter. I found several big name bloggers talking about being in London for a big superhero film set visit, which was NOT a Marvel film.
After other fans even tweeted at those bloggers if it is about Justice League, they were answered by tweets that only said "Tuesday" and other cryptic messages. Even more interesting is the fact that even a lot of critics who flat out hated everything DC related in the last years, where invited. Devin Faraci (the king of DC movie haters) even tweeted out he never had this much fun writing up a set visit.
So... apparently we will get something juicy and Justice League related on Tuesday. I would bet on a roundtable interview and maybe the first official team photo of the Justice League. Stay tuned!
In related news it seems that Amber Heard might lose her role as Mera in the film, as she missed her costume fitting due to the stress of her very public court fight with husband Johnny Depp. We'll see if WB will wait for her to get through this bad time or simply recast the role.
Suicide Squad Joker Ink Explained
Suicide Squad is almost here and the hype is almost unbearable for me! I especially look forward to Jared Leto's interpretation of the Joker, which I feel looks amazing so far and is a really great amalgam between the RIP, Endgame and Dark Knight Returns versions of the character. However there have been a lot of divisive reactions on this new version of the character having a more thuggish look with tattoos and a grill. Director David Ayer now talked a bit about that choice to Yahoo Movies:
"A lot of it has to do with creating a character with some kind of history and footprint in our world. And not have this sacrosanct being outside of our continuum, our reality. If a guy like him really existed today, where would he come from? How would he do business? Who would he know? What would he look like? In my mind, I took a lot of inspiration from drug lords on Instagram. It’s a great way to understand the lifestyle of a villain."
"The tattoos tell a very specific story and eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world."
He then talked about the process of playing the Joker for someone who is very method in his approach like Jared Leto.
"With Jared, it’s tough for him. He constantly has to give birth to himself, he goes away, he comes back, he shoots, he goes away… The Joker is something you have to be, and you can see how exhausting and painful it is for him to be this character. But you can feel it when he comes to work, the crew feels it, everyone feels it. It’s like the birds stop flying. He’s f*ing terrifying."
Even Margot Robbie, who is playing Harley Quinn, chimed in on the topic of Mr. J:
“It’s really interesting. Sometimes it can be awkward, sometimes it can be terrifying, most of the time it’s just funny. I’m trying not to laugh, because he says such hilarious things. Jared’s really funny, and terrifying, and just nuts. Absolutely nuts. It’s really interesting to work with someone so method, because I haven’t worked with someone doing that before.”
I really can't wait for this film, guys! HOLY MOLEY!
Spider-man and Batman VR Video Games Announced
Check out the trailers for the newest superhero based games that came out during E3 last week!
First up is the PS4 exclusive Spider-man game, made by Insomniac Games. It really looks like this could be even better than the Arkham games, in terms of production value and details. I cannot begin to describe how excited I am for this, as it's existence as a PS4 exclusive title almost guarantees at least a very good game (people who played all Playstation exclusive games of the last few years, like Last of Us, Uncharted and the like, know what I mean).
The other trailer is for Rocksteady's newest venture into the Arkham games universe with Batman Arkham VR, which will also be exclusive for PS4 and Playstation VR! This won't be a full game, but a 60 minute VR experience in which you explore Wayne Manor, the batcave and then solve a murder with your detective abilities. Check out the trailer above!
The Spider-man game will come out sometime during 2017, while Batman Arkham VR is out this October for the launch of Playstation VR. Keep your eye on the Archonia blog for reviews of both those titles!
