Matthew Vaughn doing Man of Steel 2?! Margot Robbie on the Joker/Harley film, Han Solo solo movie picture, leaked Gambit story details and more!
Matthew Vaughn Up For Man Of Steel Sequel?
Matthew Vaughn, director of movies like Layer Cake, Kick Ass, X-Men First Class and Kingsmen, recently talked to reporters of HeyUGuys about his future in Hollywood, which might include a sequel to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.
“I am planning another Kingman, I’ve written the treatment and some of the scenes… I don’t know what I’m going to do next but I have had chats about Superman, I love Superman. If somebody asks me to do Indiana Jones, most of the superheros, or Star Wars, the fanboy in me can’t help but be excited,”
In another interview, this time with Collider, he revealed more about his thoughts on how to do a Superman movie.
“Weirdly if I did do Superman—and I made the mistake of telling someone yesterday I have spoken about it and then wallop (laughs)... I think my main take would be, it’s really boring but make a Superman film. I just don’t feel a proper Superman—I think Donner did it to perfection for that time. Just doing the modern—I wanna do a modern version of the Donner [version]. Go back to the source material… For me Superman is color, feel-good, heroic. He’s a beacon of light in darkness. And that’s what I think Superman should be.”
I am not a huge fan of any of Vaughn's movies and actually disagree with his vision of Superman entirely. As a HUGE fan of what Snyder did with the character in MoS and BvS (which is modernising and putting him into a world that is very close to our own, which is a lot more cynical and dark than what we might be used to when we think of classic Superman), I don't want another return to the Reeve/Donner era of the character, which was a big reason I always thought of Superman as boring as a child. Bryan Singer already tried returning to that, in a modern way, with Superman Returns, which clearly didn't work for most people either.
Don't get me wrong, I think the first Reeve Superman is a great superhero movie... for its time. The super silver agey, cheesy version of Superman is simply nothing I am interested in and tbh hasn't shown up in the modern comics for quite a while either. I prefer to contrast a character like Supes with a more real and maybe dark world, which in turn made him seem more heroic to me in MoS than the old movies.
We will see if Vaughn really ends up doing his (read: Donners) take on Clark and what will happen with the property in the future. Until then I am happy to get more Henry Cavill Supes in Justice League.
Star Trek Discovery Opening Online
The first episode of the new Star Trek series has aired yesterday and Star Trek fans (Trekkers? Trekkies? I dunno, you tell me) are pretty happy with it so far. Star Trek has been a staple of geek TV since the 60s, so it's only fitting that it is a part of the TV landscape again in, what might be geekdoms golden age.
You can now check out the (stunningly beautiful) opening credits above to hype you up for a return into one of the most beloved sci-fi universes.
Han Solo Solo Movie Image
The Han Solo solo film (I love saying that) is well underway to be completed. After it lost it's original directors (Chris Lord and Phil Miller) during shooting, Ron Howard (Apollo 13) took over directing duties a few weeks ago. The long standing Hollywood director now shared a look at the movie, which he captioned with
"Shooting a scene about desperate and dangerous times in the Galaxy."
The Han Solo solo film (stop me) will arrive in our galaxy in 2018. I am still not sure if the movie is a good idea (as recasting Han is like recasting Rocky... heresy), but we will find out in a year, because there is no way all of us won't go see it anyway.
Gambit Movie Plot Leak
The long awaited (and possibly stuck in development hell) X-Men spin off movie, Gambit, is still not anywhere near production. Star Channing Tatum recently talked about the movie, confirmed that he is still attached to it and that after seeing how great Logan was, the film's team went back to the drawing board to make sure it ends up as good as it can possibly be. Now, according to Splash Report, that new plot outline has leaked and you can read it now. Some SPOILERS for the set up of the movie, obviously.
Remy Lebeau (Channing Tatum) is on trial in New-Orleans. He’s considered a huge security risk. We flashback to almost 25 years before. Master thief Luke Lebeau runs into eight-year-old Gambit while doing a heist. Impressed by his skills, he offers to take the mutant orphan under his wings. Raised alongside other strays he calls “cousins”, the teenage Gambit becomes the superstar of the Thief Guild. He encounters Bella Donna Boudreaux while on the run from the police. Sparks immediately fly since Bella is also a fellow mutant. Their love is directly prohibited by both families since the Boudreaux are sworn enemies of the Lebeau clan. Deciding to unite the two sides, Remy offers to have the two clans team up on a HUGE heist to profit both families. Of course, the whole plan goes awry, and in the chaos, Maryanne Boudreaux shoots and kill Luke Lebeau. We jump to 10 years later; Gambit is hired to do a job in Paris to steal something from the Louvre Museum. It was apparently a test job to see if he still has it. His mysterious employer is revealed to be Nathaniel Essex a.k.a. Mr. Sinister. He offers Gambit 40 million to recover a mysterious trunk that was stolen by the Boudreaux clan. It will be auctioned off during the yearly Thieves Ball where all the criminal organizations in the world meet up. It uses New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebrations as a cover. Gambit decides to enlist a crew of mutants to pull off this seemingly impossible heist…
Sounds a lot more interesting than I would've thought, especially with the introduction of long standing X-Men bad guy Mr. Sinister! I really think this one might actually turn out to be quite a surprise, especially when we look at how well Logan and Deadpool turned out for the FOX-Men universe.
Damn. I'm kinda excited now.
Margot Robbie Talks Joker/Harley Spin Off
Margot Robbie stunned even the Suicide Squad haters with her performance of Harley Quinn in DC's third DCEU film. Of course we are all waiting with baited breath to find out when and where we will end up seeing her again. It could either be Suicide Squad 2, Joker/Harley Quinn: Mad Love, or Gotham City Sirens, which teams up Harley with Catwoman and Poison Ivy. All three movies are greenlit and in various stages of preproduction, so your guess is as good as mine, but we will definitely get a LOT of Harley in out future, which is a good thing.
Margot recently talked to Comingsoon.net about the Joker/Harley movie and had a lot of interesting thoughts on the film and its directors, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, with whom she already shot two movies (Focus and Tango Whiskey Foxtrot).
"They’re great! It’s fun working with a directing duo, and I love them. I’ve obviously done two films with them so I think they’re brilliant."
"I’m personally a sucker for a love story. In any iteration. I think people enjoy seeing two characters who, in Harley and Joker’s case, would die for one another. It’s kind of romantic in a messed up way."
I am super excited for this one, as the Joker and Harley stuff was easily my favorite thing is Suicide Squad and I didn't get nearly enough of it there (my only BIG problem with Squad btw). The break-up between Harley and Joker having a whole film to explore is a great thing and I can't wait to see more of Robbie and Leto in their roles. I really hope this will be the next movie in the Harley canon, since it would make a lot of sense after how Suicide Squad ended.
