An update on the final season of Gotham, Scarlet Witch talks Avengers 4, X-Men vs Avengers and who is writing Suicide Squad 2?!
Gotham Season 5 WILL Feature Batman
Gotham, the Batman prequel series, return in 2019 for the 5th and FINAL season of the show! The controversial show will have a shortened episode order, going down from 24 to 11 episodes. Not only that, but only 10 episodes will feature the normal cast, including young Bruce Wayne. As it is planned right now, episode 11 will skip ahead in time 10 years and will show the debut of this universe's version of Batman, in full costume and everything, taking on the villains who tried to take over the city so many times throughout earlier seasons!
If they will try to age up young Bruce actor David Mazouz in some way to play Batman, or cast a whole new actor for the finale remains to be seen, but showrunner John Stevens shed some light on the Batsuit via bamsmackpow.com.
"I think it’s more matte. It’s inspired by, if I had to compare to any one costume, I’d say it’s closer to The Dark Knight Rises,"
"It’s a little more metallic Bat battle-y looking rather than something like the Suicide one or the Affleck one. How much money can we allocate towards spending on this costume because it’s got to look good. Because you don’t want to spend five years, and all of a sudden go, ‘Great episode, but that was a really crappy looking costume.’ There’s a lot of pressure, but luckily our wardrobe department is amazing so all the designs they’re doing are going to be great. And we went with short ears."
I have fallen off Gotham mid way in season 3 and then dipped in and out for some special episodes. The unique blend of super serious and super silly tones wasn't really my thing, plus the liberties the show takes with the characters has annoyed me more than anything else (not naming Jerome or Jeremiah Joker, when they both were clearly supposed to be that character was just annoying to me, for example). After hearing these news, I am kinda back in, I have to admit. I want to see how they wrap up this very different Batman origin and I wanna see their spin on Batman, even if I might not end up liking it. Kinda excited to find out!
James Gunn Hired To Write Suicide Squad 2
James Gunn's relationship with Marvel and Disney had an abrupt ending this summer, when old tweets of his with jokes about pedophilia surfaced. While his future in Hollywood was in question for a while, it seems DC/WB threw the Guardians of the galaxy director/writer a life line, by hiring him to pen the script for the Suicide Squad sequel.
Originally Gavin O'Connor (Warrior, The Accountant) was set to direct the film, but according to sources of the Wrap his script ideas got used to punch up the Birds of Prey script, which is the next Harley Quinn movie starting to shoot early 2019, so O'Connor dropped off the project, which left the door open for a new take on it.
According to the Wrap Gunn's Suicide Squad will be a fresh take on the franchise, which some blogs have translated into a full reboot, which I doubt is what is going to happen.
At this point it is not clear yet if Gunn will only write or possibly direct the film, but I think that probably depends on the quality of the script. I think he is a good fit for Squad 2 and Squad director David Ayer plus Drax actor Dave Bautista agreed about that on Twitter (Bautista even already lobbied for a role in the film).
Elizabeth Olson Talks Avengers 4
In an panel at ACE comic con Elizabeth Olson talked a little bit about what we can expect in Avengers 4!
"It’s only going to get worse,
A fan asked if we might see the vision Tony had thanks to Scarlet Witch in Age of Ultron, or if that influences the ending of the film, to which the actress had this to say.
"I don’t know. I don’t know if that’s what could have happened if Ultron took over. I’m not sure. I think it’s up to interpretation."
It wasn’t something that I remember someone was saying that we’re going to go full circle to Infinity War — there wasn’t an Infinity War at that time [laughs]. But I think I always thought of it being what would happen if Ultron won. But I think it’s more interesting the way you’re thinking about it."
The, still untitled, Avengers sequel will storm into our theatres next year!
Sophie Turner Talks X-Men In The MCU
With the Fox-Disney merger happening probably before the end of the year, it is only a matter of time until we see the X-Men being rebooted into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, where the Avengers exist.
Newsweek talked to Game of Thrones, X-Men actress Sophie Turner about the X-Men meeting the Avengers and the actress didn't seem to love the idea.
"I don’t know. I feel the complexities of the X-Men being shunned by society and segregated is not something that happens in the Avengers universe. Of course, I want to see them crossover but I don't think the themes through X-Men will collaborate well with the Avengers. It’ll be very different. If they do it, I’d love to see how it turns out."
I get what she means, but I think Avengers Infinity War has shown that the MCU is also able to go deeper and more complex, if the filmmakers want it to be, so I don't think we have to expect the X-Men to be less political under the Disney/Marvel Studios banner.
