A lot of news in terms of superhero TV and movies! A rumored Superman TV show for the CW, Momoa talks Aquaman's classic suit and much more!
New Aquaman Details Revealed
One of the biggest reveals of the last Aquaman trailer was the first official look at the comic accurate Aquaman costume at the end. Now, while talking to Total Film magazine, James Wan and Jason Momoa talked a little bit about bringing the suit to life.
Wan: "It took a long time designing it. The suit is kind of campy... So I'm like, 'How do I make it cool for today's audience?' The other thing I wanted to get right, too, is his classic weapon, his trident. I wanted to make sure that it's actually a trident."
Momoa: "It's a hard suit to pull off. He's been literally ridiculed his whole career. I feel like the real die-hard Aquaman fans are going be like, 'Yes!'"
Momoa also was asked about Aquaman maybe being sort of a bridge movie between the old DCEU and the new one, which will hopefully be better received critically.
"DC gets bashed on a lot...you know Justice League, what happened there. I just feel like, if it is [a bridge], then great. I just think it's a great story. It's definitely colourful. We're underwater. It's a world we've never seen before. If that's what it takes to bridge it? [frick]. Put it on my back. I'll guess I'll help everyone if you need me!"
As someone who really loves MoS, BvS and Suicide Squad, to me the only real blunder of the DCEU was Justice League, but I am sure Aquaman will help us to forget what a mess that movie has turned out to be. So far Aquaman looks like a breath of fresh air in terms of superhero movies.
Iron Fist and Luke Cage Cancelled
Netflix announced last week that both, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, are being cancelled after season 2 and won't be renewed for potential 3rd seasons.
Luke Cage Showrunner Cheo Hodari Cocker had this to say about the cancellation on Twitter.
A lot memories. A lot of individual thank you calls to make. Just want to say thank you to Marvel, Netflix, the best Writer’s room, cast, crew, the Midnight Hour, all those who graced the stage at Harlem’s Paradise and the most incredible fan base in the world. Forward always...
Now fans of the Netflix Marvel universe, comprised out of the two cancelled shows, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and the Defenders, are waiting to hear what will happen with those other shows. Among fans the feeling that especially DD is more or less safe from cancellation, because it has been the best received show out of the bunch, but I feel that actually none of these shows is safe. Disney is about to roll out their own streaming service, like Netflix and the DC Universe streaming app, with the combined power of all their franchises, including Marvel and Star Wars, so I don't think Disney will leave their properties in competitors hands before that move.
Superman TV Show Rumored For The CW
Since WB has currently no plans to use Superman, or any of his related characters (like Lois, Lex etc) for the movie universe anymore, there are rumors for a Tyler Hoechlin Superman series at the CW. The actor fist played Superman in a Supergirl double episode in 2016 and this season of Supergirl sees Lois and Lex getting added to the CW universe.
I am a huge fan of Superman and I actually loved the recent movie versions of him, Lois and Lex, while I find Supergirl an old somewhat entertaining soap, so a Superman series in that style does not have a lot of promise to me. I also really dislike the very Christopher Reeves-aw shucks type of Superman they are going for with Hoechlin, so yea... this doesn't seem like great news for me. People who love the CW's take on those characters surely will be thrilled though and I am happy for all of you who feel that way.
Daredevil Actor Talks Captain America Casting
Wilson Bethel plays Bullseye in season 3 of Daredevil, but he almost would've been in the Marvel universe a lot earlier in a very, VERY different role... because he almost got cast as Captain America Steve Rogers!
"I mean that was both, probably the single most exciting time of my life and also the single most devastating when it didn't happen. But, yeah, that was eight years ago now. They put me in the Cap suit and did everything. So, I screen tested it at Marvel with a number of other guys. They ended up releasing all the other guys... I was meeting with Joe Johnson to discuss the role and see story boards. So, it was this insane period where during that time I kind of thought that maybe I was going to actually get the role. I actually screen tested again a second time a month later on my birthday."
"And then, I think it was like one or two days later that they made the announcement that Chris Evans got the part. So, to be perfectly honest, that was one of the hardest moments in my professional career. And it spun me out for a while to be honest with you. But I'm also a firm believer that things happen as they're supposed to, and obviously, Chris did an incredible job in that role. And my life, while it hasn't brought me to lead the Avengers, has been really rich and rewarding in other ways. So, I can't spend too much time lamenting it. And honestly, just the fact that things have kind of come full circle in a way, and I still get to be a dude in a suit, is pretty exciting."
Seeing him act all creepily and disturbed in Daredevil season 3 the actor shows a LOT of chops, so I am sure he would have been a great Cap as well! Check him out in DD season 3, currently streaming on Netflix!
