This week is all about Aquaman, new DC solo movies, Daredevil cancellation and (maybe?) a Superman game? Find out now!
Zatanna and Blue Beetle Movies Planned For DC
According to Deadline, Warner Bros has a few new movies planned for their DC Films line up, based on people loving the diversity of the team in Suicide Squad and the fempower of Wonder Woman: the Blue Beetle and Zatanna are supposed to get solo movies!
The Blue Beetle is Jamie Reyes, a young teen from Albuquerque, who finds a mysterious blue stone scarab, which interlinks with his body, to become the Blue Beetle, thanks to amazing alien technology (he is as close as DC gets to having their own Spider-Man). Zatanna, on the other hand, is one of DC's most formidable human magic users (with Dr Fate and John Constantine), who can use amazing spells, by saying the spell backwards. Both characters had short introductions in Smallville, way back when, but other than that haven't had any live action adaptation. Deadline also said that there are more female led superhero movies planned (next to Birds of Prey, Batgirl and Supergirl) and that those absolutely take precedence over male led movies, like a Superman sequel, or even the still in development Flash movie with Ezra Miller.
While I think both characters absolutely have potential for movies, I feel this is again WB taking the wrong lessons from their successes. When Dark Knight came out they seemed to think "Oh, its dark, thats why people like it!" and turned everything very dark. Now, after WW was a hit, they seem to think "Oh, because she is a woman, that's why people like it!"and rush out solo movies for every female character they can think of. Female representation is obviously important in these films, but to plan movies for smaller characters like Supergirl, Batgirl and Zatanna, before getting to do Flash, Green Lantern Corps (which could feature a female Lantern btw), a Batman movie and a Superman sequel, seems to me like the wrong way to go. Marvel did it best by establishing their biggest characters first, to establish the universe and then doing crazy, interesting spin offs. Plus it is not like DC didn't already lead the charge with female superhero movies, with the Harley led Suicide Squad and WW, obviously.
We will see how this will work out. Meanwhile I am still waiting for the Batman movie, MoS sequel and Green Lantern Corps movie.
Daredevil Season 4 Cancelled
Daredevil season 3 debuted only a few weeks ago, but now it has been revealed, by Netflix themselves, that we won't see a 4th season of old hornhead.
Now Marvel released a statment about the cancellation:
Marvel is extremely grateful to the huge audience that loved Marvel’s Daredevil. From the moment of young Matt’s first act of heroism to the birth of Page, Murdock, & Nelson, it has been a unbelievable journey. We are incredibly proud of the amazing showrunners and writers starting with Drew Goddard and Steven DeKnight, Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie and Erik Oleson, Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Vincent D’Onofrio and our casts who brought our characters to life with such excellence, and every one of the fantastic crews in NYC. We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.
The cancellation is rumored to be happening because Disney wants to regroup all their franchises under one umbrella for the launch of their streaming service. Before you are happy about a possible 4th season on the Disney+, insiders say that is not likely going to happen, as Netflix will retain the streaming rights for the first seasons and also the relationship between the Marvel TV and the Marvel movie people, who are more involved with Disney+ (for the Loki, Vision and Scarlet Witch shows) is a really bad one and that they would rather reboot completely. Next to that, the super mature tone of the Netflix Marvel shows probably would not fly on a streaming service called Disney+.
I absolutely loved season 1 and 2 of the show, but really didn't enjoy season 3, so I am actually fine with this. We will still get Punisher season 2 and Jessica Jones season 3 on Netflix, even though we probably know that those will be next on the chopping block.
Rocksteady Is NOT Working On A Superman Game
Rocksteady Games are the famous makers of the Batman Arkham trilogy (every Arkham game except the highly underrated Arkham Origins, which is, by the way, my absolute favorite of the series) and haven't released a full size game since 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight (they released Batman Arkham VR three years ago, but that was about an hour of gameplay, largely made with already created assets from Knight), so of course the fans have been speculating about what could be next for the London based game developers. The studio announced it wouldn't be another Batman game.
For years now, the rumors have been that Rocksteady's next game would be a Superman game, set in the same universe of their Arkham games (Rocksteady is a WB owned studio, so it makes sense that they stick with a DC based game, after what their games did for Batman's popularity). Two years ago, when Injustice 2 released, they even gifted Injustice developer Netherealm a cake with a very unusual Superman logo, the proof was apparently in the pudding that Superman would indeed be next. Now, with evidence for a Superman game reveal at this weeks game awards mounting in the last weeks, Rocksteady director Sefton Hill took to Twitter to destroy all our dreams:
Looking forward to #TheGameAwards this year! We’re still hard at work in our development bunker so don’t expect an announcement from @Rocksteadygames. When it’s ready to show, you’ll be the first to know. Spoiler: it’s not Superman 😳
Ouch. Well, who knows... maybe the Superman game reveal is still coming this weekend, just not made by Rocksteady. Arkham Origins developer WB Montreal hasn't put out a game since Origin in 2014, so maybe that answers the question what they have been doing for so long. We will know hopefully soon.
New Aquaman International Trailer
With Aquaman, finally swimming into theaters next week (at least here in the EU), we have a final international trailer, which delves even deeper into the movie. It is a little bit spoilery, so watch at your own risk.
So far the first reactions from fans and critics hail Aquaman as the best DC movie since the Dark Knight, so it seems like we are in for a treat very soon! Until then, get all the merch, read the comics, or rewatch the awesome trailers over and over again!
